what is an “identity tension?”

A sense of self that is uncertain, unbalanced, fractured, broken, and/or at odds with another part of how one sees and understands themselves. This tension could be primarily an internal, or internal and external in nature.  

Examples of identity tension for a Christian may include (but are not limited to): 

  • Confusing sexual attractions/desires
  • Unwanted sexual attractions/desires
  • No sexual attractions/desires or an aversion to sexual attractions/desires
  • Confusing sense of one’s gendered self
